Releases Before Next Friday

Hope everyone had as good a Thanksgiving as I did, with time with family and good food.  I thought I'd share a couple MP3 releases happening before next Friday that I'm looking forward to right now.

December 1st, AmaLee, Nostalgia VII: AmaLee is a singer who covers Video Game and Anime music.  I strongly recommend her covers of Fire Emblem Fates' "Lost in Thoughts All Alone" and Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's "Lifelight."  This release will have songs from Fate/Zero, the show that introduced the world to the famous character Saber (aka Altria Pendragon, a young woman who is King Arthur), and Fairy Tail, the show famous for the characters Lucy Heartfilia (named after "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds") and Erza Scarlet.

December 4th, Band-Maid, Conqueror: Band-Maid is a Japanese all-girls rock band that performs wearing maids outfits.  They have performed at Sakura-con, but I don't know if they've ever done a US Tour.  They have a good hard rock/heavy metal sound and the single "The Dragon Cries" from this album was very good.

11/29/2019 Releases of Note

Since I'm going to be busy tomorrow with the Holiday, this week's post is early.

Pink Floyd-The Later Years, 1987-2019: A release of live cuts and remixes.  I feel this may be the last bit of new Pink Floyd music we'll ever get since I don't see David Gilmour and Roger Waters reuniting.  It's also going to be released a day before the 40th anniversary of the release of The Wall.

Rick Wakeman-Christmas Portraits: The Famous Yes Keyboardist has an album of Christmas songs ready for the Christmas Season.  The singles have sounded good and if you like piano music, I recommend this.

Molly Hatchet-Battleground: The Southern Rock Band famous for the songs "Flirtin' With Disaster" and "Beating The Odds" is back with a new live album.  This will show off their new lead singer and how the band sounds now and hopefully will revitalize interest in them.

John Barrowman-A Fabulous Christmas: The actor famous for Dr. Who, Torchwood and Shark Attack 3; Megalodon, has a Christmas album of wonderfully sung music.  He also released a good cover of Demi Lovato's "Skyscraper" some time ago and apparently has a Broadway career.

11/22/2019 releases of note

First off, I want to say Happy Birthday to my Brother.  I'm playing his playlist in Spotify, which features The Beatles, Glenn Miller, The Newsboys, Queen, Journey, Strong Bad and as of Veteran's Day weekend, Sabaton.  There is definitely some severe tonal shift, but that's kind of what makes it fun.

Not too many releases this week, the record companies seem to be winding down for the end of the year.  Considering how big this year was, I can't blame them for want to take the Holidays easier.

Jimi Hendrix-Songs For Groovy Children; The Fillmore East Concerts: A collection of four performances in two days, New Year's Eve 1969 and New Year's Day 1970 at the Fillmore East.  Released for the first time are performances of "Foxy Lady," "Fire" and "Voodoo Chile (Slight Return)."  There are also multiple recordings of a personal favorite of mine, "Power of Soul."

Various Artists-Hannukah+: Religiously, I'm Protestant, but I consider Jewish people siblings in God.  I was delighted to discover "Ocho Kandelikas" on the Idina Menzel Christmas album this year as another Hannukah song and this album features songs by Jack Black and The Flaming Lips, as well as a few artists I'd like to try out.

Beatles Go Baroque: I just heard of this one yesterday.  It sounds like it will be the music of The Beatles rearranged into the style of classical music.  This has been done before, but is always nice to hear, and I'm looking forward to the arrangements.

My 200 favorite songs from the 2010s

I saw some Firefox homepage list the "Best 200 songs of the 2010s" in October.  I wanted to take on that challenge and listed my 200 favorite songs released since the start of 2010.  I attempted to do it most-favorite to lowest-favorite, but this could change; these days, it seems music is either "I like this" or "I don't like this."  I will say, these are the 200 songs that created the most powerful memories and emotions of the last 10 years and I'm hard-pressed to think of others that would fill the shoes they currently fill.

Personal favorite songs of 2019

I know the year isn't technically over yet, but like I said in the last post, I feel only The Who's album could affect this further and I'd rather stop this at its current massive length of 196 songs.  Keep in mind, these were just my absolute favorite songs released by my favorite artists, this list could've been much longer due to many great songs on Soundgarden's posthumous live album, more songs I liked from Sweet Oblivion, most of Peter Frampton's Blues Album and several songs I really liked that I've listed in other blog posts from albums that didn't even get on here.  I also really show my Seattle area/Northwest Washington roots with a lot of the choices here, Sleater-Kinney's lead singer and Death Cab For Cutie attended college in my hometown and this features Seattle-area artists Soundgarden, Geoff Tate, Duff McKagan, Toni Cornell, Brandi Carlile and her new supergroup The Highwomen.

The Gift; The Journey of Johnny Cash by Johnny Cash, friends, family and Mike McCready, who was in a band with Chris Cornell, whose song "Rusty Cage" Johnny Cash covered.  (Didn't feel like listing individual tracks and it's more audio drama about a musician than a collection of songs, but it is amazing and highly recommended)

11/15/2019 releases of note

Right now, this looks to be the last busy release day of this year and I am considering, due to the high amount of songs I've heard about from Spotify, making today's releases the last I'm going to consider for my Favorites of 2019.  The main reason is the list is over 160 songs already and there's only one album post this day likely to make an impact, The Who's album on 12/6.  Anyway, here are the releases tonight.

Foreigner-Double Vision; Then and Now: A live album featuring both Lou Gramm and Kelly Hansen on vocals for the classic rock band.  They've already released great renditions of "Hot Blooded" and "I Want To Know What Love Is," and the album also promises classics like "Double Vision" and "Juke Box Hero."  I am seriously looking forward to this one.

Celine Dion-Courage: The powerhouse Canadian singer is back and releasing a Brand New album.  I've been a minor fan of her work since she was on the Touched By An Angel Soundtrack and it's great to hear her again.

Frozen II Soundtrack-The soundtrack to the movie to be widely released next week, featuring Idina Menzel, Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and TWO songs for Jonathan Groff, including a continuation of "Reindeer(s) are Better Than People."  Looking forward to this and the movie itself, it looks like another good animated film from Disney.

Blackberry Smoke-Homecoming Live In Atlanta: A Southern Rock band from Georgia, Blackberry Smoke entered my radar by playing "Working For MCA" at a Lynyrd Skynyrd event in their hometown Fox Theater, where the most famous live Lynyrd Skynyrd album, "One More From The Road" was recorded in July 1976, primarily on July 8th.

Ronnie Wood-Mad Lad, A Live Tribute To Chuck Berry: Without Chuck Berry, there'd be no Rock and Roll.  Former Rolling Stones member Ronnie Wood teams with his Blues Band to deliver classics like "Rock and Roll Music" and "Johnny B. Goode."  While this will be the second Chuck Berry tribute after one on 11/1, that was one of my more favorite covers albums and was fun to sing along to what I knew from it.  The only downside is there will be less tracks this time.

11/8/2019 releases of note

Sorry this one is relatively late, I had a tough time getting out of bed.  Anyway, here are the releases I'm looking forward to the most this week on Spotify:

Jimmy Page, Jack Bruce, Ian Stewart-Tribute to Alexis Korner: I'll be honest, this may not be on Spotify, namely because I've not seen it available to be pre-ordered as MP3s.  Still, this features the guitarist from Led Zeppelin, the bassist from Cream and the pianist from The Rolling Stones who jammed with Led Zeppelin on "Rock and Roll" and "Boogie for Stu," all paying tribute to an artist who helped influence the British Blues scene.

Quiet Riot-Hollywood Cowboys: In 2015, I got the chance to see this band.  Since then, they've recorded a studio album and a live album with the same lineup, except a different lead singer.  This is the second studio album from this lineup, featuring longtime members Chuck Wright and Frankie Banali, and relatively recent guitarist Alexi Grossi.

Pat Travers-Live April 30th, 1981, Pittsburgh, PA: Pat Travers has become one of my more favorite blues rockers since having the Spotify app, playing both covers and originals in a fun, loud way.  He's performed songs by Aerosmith, Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd and has great guitar tone.  I look forward to hearing more from him tonight.

John Fogerty-50 year Trip, Live At Red Rocks: The lead singer of Creedence Clearwater Revival is still going, 50 years after Woodstock.  "Fortunate Son" and "Centerfield" were already released as singes and sound good, and I look forward to revisiting others like "Born on the Bayou," "Have You Ever Seen The Rain" and "Suzie Q."

Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders-Get the Money: A band made by the drummer of the Foo Fighters.  This album's singles show a great display of hard rock and amazon.com's description promises appearances from other Seattle-based musicians such as Dave Grohl, Duff McKagan and Nancy Wilson.

George Michael and Wham!-Last Christmas Soundtrack: A soundtrack for a movie featuring a musician I'm curious about.  George Michael passed on in 2016, and I've only heard him sing "Somebody to Love" at the Freddie Mercury tribute concert and be responsible for a joke about androgyny in the second season of Full House.  I'd like to hear more of his music, Tegan and Sara credited him as an inspiration, and here seems like a good chance.

Surprises from Last Weekend

I don't usually talk about the surprise singles in Spotify the previous weekend, especially not so soon as Monday, but these were quite pleasant to get and I felt I needed to share them.

First, from the previously announced Last of the Street Survivors: Lyve album by Lynyrd Skynyrd-Free Bird has an extra surprise.  For the last twenty years, the band has played "Travelin' Man" with footage of deceased lead singer Ronnie Van Zant singing while current lead singer, his brother Johnny Van Zant, sings on stage.  However, it seems on this tour, knowing it was the farewell tour, they put up footage and audio of Ronnie singing the last verse of "Free Bird," thus introing the solo on the band's last tour.  It's a beautiful way to bring things full circle and reminds me of the 1987 live album, the first post-plane crash album, where Johnny declared, "There's only one man who can sing this song on stage, that's Ronnie Van Zant."

Second, Hell's Belles lead guitarist Adrian Connor released a cover of Ozzy Osbourne's "Bark at the Moon."  Since it came out at 9:00 pm on Halloween my time, it was well-timed.  It's a nice cover and she delivers the guitar and vocals well.  I look forward to hearing this throughout my life alongside the original version.

Third, a collaboration I wouldn't have thought of in a million years.  If you check Amazon.com's pre-orders like I do, you'd know Sci-Fi/Horror Movie star Jeff Goldblum has released some albums with an orchestra.  From the track and album cover, I think he plays piano on them rather than sing.  Last Friday, he released his second album and one of the tracks was sung by Miley Cyrus.  If you can't believe it, I had a hard time, too, but it's on my phone and I can assure you, it exists.  It's a 1950s or earlier Jazz-style piece, like Miley should be dressed as Miss White from the Clue Movie while performing it or something.  It may be a cover from that time, the piece's name is "The Thrill Is Gone/Django."  It also is not the BB King piece "The Thrill is Gone," that has a different melody.  Miley often said 10 years ago she liked watching Marilyn Monroe films and this is probably the closest she's gotten to imitating Ms. Monroe.  It's a nice jazz piece and a welcome addition to my music collection.
