Black Sabbath’s Deluxe Editions were pretty good, I enjoyed hearing the live versions of “Neon Knights,” “Children of the Sea,” “Die Young,” “The Mob Rules,” “Voodoo,” “Country Girl,” “War Pigs,” “Iron Man” and “Children of the Grave.” As always, there was a small handful of surprise release singles; Selena Gomez released her final single for a project releasing this week (more on that later), British Metal Band Saxon released a cover of The Beatles’ “Paperback Writer,” which was pretty good and fun, Pop Stars Aly and AJ, who got their start in Seattle and were on the Disney Channel show “Phil of the Future,” which aired back in my High School days, released a single called “Pretty Places,” preparing for a new album which will be released early May, while Duff McKagan of Guns N Roses and Velvet Revolver (also from Seattle), released the first track from his early 80s punk project, The Living, where he was actually the guitarist. It may sound like a generic punk track until you find out a well-known bassist is delivering those guitar solos and riffs, explaining why his bass playing goes so above and beyond.
There are four major releases I’m looking forward to this week:
Blackmore’s Night-Nature’s Light: Ritchie Blackmore is best known as the aggressive Fender Stratocaster player behind Deep Purple and Rainbow. However, in the 1990s, he met Candice Night, who convinced him to play medieval-styled folk music, so he traded his Stratocaster in for a lute. He revived Rainbow in 2016 until 2019, and last year attempted to released the title track for this album, only to pull it back, released a 4-track Christmas EP, then release singles for this. While medieval folk music isn’t usually my style, Amazon.com’s advertisement says he does play his Stratocaster on a pair of tracks, and the title track is a nice piece of music, so it’s at least going to be worth a listen, I feel.
Chez Kane: Danny Rexon of Crazy Lixx, a band signed to Frontiers Music SRL, felt while the label was doing great keeping 80s Metal alive, they needed some hard rock women. To that end, he hired British singer Chez Kane for this album. The singles have provided shades of Pat Benatar and Cyndi Lauper and the song “Rocket on the Radio” is a darn fun song I really like to listen to and need to do so more often.
Bon Jovi-Rarities: A collection of broadcast recordings from the 90s, this features classics like “Wanted Dead or Alive” and “Living On A Prayer” as well as covers like “Save The Last Dance For Me” and “Helter Skelter.” I honestly want to hear The Beatles’ Heavy Metal song done by Bon Jovi, I recently purchased the U2 version, which opened with Bono declared “Charlie Manson stole this from The Beatles, we’re stealing it back.”
Selena Gomez-Revelacion: An EP by world-famous Pop Star Selena Gomez, this one is almost entirely in Spanish (or en espanol for those who speak the language a little). The three singles suggest this will be a fun, dance release that will make you want to “baila, baila.” She also seems to be calling on inspiration from her namesake for her singing her, that of course being Selena, the Latina singer who was played by Jennifer Lopez in her biopic.
