I apologize for Tuesday morning’s post to those who were disturbed by it, the fact is, it was disheartening to know Johnny and Donnie Van Zant were going to support their politician and no one else was likely going to comment on how that flew in the face of their older brother’s work. I have honestly felt that while the Skynyrd reunion project started with good intentions, it gradually degraded with Johnny having a very different mindset than Ronnie, Ronnie wanting to leave a positive impact while Johnny is more about giving people what he thinks they want based likely on the local Jacksonville fanbase and interactions with the surviving members, who are now just Gary Rossington. I feel a telling moment was when Ed King and Mike Estes were fired in the mid-90s despite still being capable guitarists so the Outlaws’ Hughie Thomasson and Blackfoot’s Rickey Medlocke could take their place. I will say, having seen Skynyrd in 2013, they do put on a memorable, worthwhile show that was worth seeing in spite of the flaws and criticism.
Anyway, on to last week’s best music. My favorite music starts with the ATTENTION live album by Miley Cyrus, especially the renditions of “Plastic Hearts,” “Heart of Glass,” “Bang-Bang x See You Again,” “Jolene,” “Edge of Midnight,” “The Climb” and “Wrecking Ball x Nothing Compares 2 U.” It was very special to hear the lyrics Prince wrote that the Cornells made therapeutic during my time mourning Uncle Jon coming from Miley. Other favorites include “A Hard Working Man,” the Avila Brothers, Billy Ray Cyrus and Snoop Dogg collaboration, the Dead Daisies live single “Long Way to Go,” “Move” by Starless, the musician name of voice actress Brianna Knickerbocker and I heard Ann Wilson’s single “A Moment in Heaven” and loved it.
The first two major releases I’m looking forward to this week are both women-sung projects, one with ties to last week, the other with ties to Classic Rock. Noah Cyrus is releasing a new single, and while some may be put off by her clinical depression in her music, I usually find it helpful someone else is feeling the hurt as fiercely as I am. Clinical Depression means you don’t hide your hurt behind snark and sarcasm online as often, you’re paralyzed because you feel any wrong move means a lecture from someone who doesn’t get that you’re hurting frequently or think you’re stupid for making comfort-based decisions for self-care.
The other is Envy of None, a supergroup with a woman singer from Portland, OR and Rush’s Alex Lifeson on guitar. The mood is more Evanescence than Rush, but it’s still worth it, Evanescence debuted when I was in Middle School and my cousin joked “Bring Me To Life” was me since I had trouble getting up in the morning. Aerosmith is also releasing a show from 1971 that features songs off their debut album, released two years later, and supergroup Black Swan (Robin McAuley-Michael Schenker, Appice, Reb Beach-Winger, Whitesnake, Jeff Pilson-Dokken, Dio, Foreigner, Matt Starr-Mr. Big) is releasing their second album. There is also going to be an album from Lucius, a women’s duo who will open for Brandi Carlile when I see her in June.
I spent a large amount of time online this last week, but I did manage to share my opinions and experiences on music with band fan-pages. My favorite tracks from “American Rock and Roll” by Don Felder are the title track, Charmed, Limelight and Rock You, my favorite Def Leppard lyrics are “Foolin’,” my favorite Cozy Powell album is Live in Munich 1977 by Rainbow, my favorite Deep Purple-Gary Moore collaboration is when Glenn Hughes sang “Nothing’s the Same” on the Bob Daisley tribute for Moore album and my favorite tracks off the 1987 Whitesnake album are “Still of the Night” and “Is This Love.” Also, since Envy of None’s album is coming out, here’s a Tweet I did about Rush: I love Rush, they're one of my favorite Canadian musical acts with "Working Man," "Freewill," "Anthem," Limelight" and "Spirit of Radio." I hear once Geddy Lee performed wearing either a Strong Bad hat or a Trogdor shirt. I look forward to Alex Lifeson with Envy of None.
I hope we all have a fine week and things get better. Let’s do what we can.
