Short fan fiction, Edelgard and Erza sparring

It was a warm summer day near Garreg Mach Monastery.  A white-haired young woman in black with a red cape walked up a nearby hill, carrying an axe.  This was a rare time she was without Hubert, Edelgard focusing as she lifted her axe, practicing strike after strike through the air, grunting with effort and minor releases of long-held tension.  She hoped her plan would come to fruition, her professor appeared sympathetic, but was she really?  Such doubts and anxieties were quickly lost as she swung her axe through the air again and again, working herself into the frenzy of a battle with an invisible opponent.  “Not bad.” Commented a lovely voice to her left.  Startled, Edelgard almost toppled over, turning to see a redhead in a suit of armor.

“I haven’t seen you before, are you a Knight of Seiros?” asked Edelgard.

“Knight of what?  I’m an armor mage in the guild Fairy Tail, we’re passing through here and I heard someone shadow-sparring.” Replied the redhead.  “The name’s Erza Scarlet.”

“Edelgard Von Hresvelg, heir to the throne of the Adrestian Empire.” Smiled Edelgard, sticking out her right hand.  Erza shook it.

“Well, Edelgard, how about a sparring match?  I’d like to keep myself sharp.” Asked Erza.  She summoned a sword.  Edelgard smirked and readied her axe.

“It’d be nice to have a real fight instead of slicing at the air.” She replied.  “Come at me with your best!”  Erza dashed forward, bringing her sword down at Edelgard.  Edelgard blocked with her axe blade and kicked Erza in the stomach, forcing her back.  She ran forth and chopped at the mage, who blocked with her blade, thrusting back to knock Edelgard on her rear.  Edelgard got up quickly and chopped again, forcing Erza’s blade towards the ground, kicking her again in their deadlock.  Erza landed on her rear this time and rose quickly, swinging horizontally at Edelgard.  Edelgard blocked with her axe, shoving Erza’s arm with the flat of her blade.  She swung again, hoping she had worn down the warrior.  She had not, Erza blocking once more and kicking Edelgard over.  Edelgard panted as she got up, swinging once more.  The blow knocked Erza’s sword from her hand, but Edelgard set her weapon to the ground, panting heavily.  “Looks like a draw…” she huffed.

“Agreed.” Nodded Erza.  “Still, that was the most fun sparring I’ve had in a while.  If you’re ever in Foire, specifically Magnolia, look me up.”

“Thank you, and if you find yourself in Adrestia, feel free to stop by the Palace in Enbarr.” Smiled Edelgard.  The two shook hands once more, creating a friendly rivalry that pushed both women to their best selves.

The End
