Another week, another Thursday, and another crop of new releases approaches tonight at 9:00 pm PDT. First, though, let’s go over what releases were good last week. The album I pre-ordered for Mom was amazing and just the spiritual medicine I needed, I hope it will do the same for her, 9 tracks from this album were added to my favorites of 2022 playlist, which I will post at the start of December. It is probable this list will exceed 200 songs. Queen’s surprise single was good and it was nice to hear new music by Freddie Mercury again and Noah Cyrus released an acoustic version of a song from her recent album, which was pleasant to hear. It also makes me wonder if she’s preparing a Deluxe Edition of her album in the future, with this singles and other, similar songs as bonus tracks. I’d be for such a release, but it would likely be costly.
Switchfoot, whose hometown Padres are in the NLCS, released a Christmas song that was fun and laid-back called “California Christmas,” while the entrance theme of “Damage CTRL,” a new Women’s tag-team in the WWE consisting of my favorite woman wrestler Bayley, Dakota Kai from Australia and Io Sky from Japan was released and sounds really cool. K-Pop group MAMAMOO released a fun EP and Orianthi released a killer Hard Rock album while No Resolve had a good heavy metal song and Skid Row (who debuted the year I was born), released their first album with their new singer, which was an intense hard rock/punk rock explosion with the best song being “Time Bomb.” Earlier this year, No Resolve released a Hard Rock version of the Encanto song “Surface Pressure,” which I recommend checking out.
So, what’s new in me-land? I’m getting a haircut Saturday, I’m trying to start up volunteer work at the Human Society Thrift Store, I’m planning on joining the Christian book club through Zoom at my Church on Sundays at 10:30 and I’m posting content and opinions to Twitter on a daily basis. That is what brought on Tuesday’s post. It is honestly hard to deal with a lot of the pain I hear about on Twitter and even harder to delay posting about it or not post about it at all. I often have to take breaks throughout the day and wonder if I’m cut out for this at all or should just stick to Facebook, where I can avoid the news and other people’s tragedy about not getting paid a livable wage or getting death threats over their orientation or the orientation of characters they play. Yet, I also get the feeling all these people don’t get much, if any, of a compassionate, Gospel-based Jesus in their life, which is what I feel I’m called to be as a Christian, just provide a presence that makes them not condemn God, but rather, realize the Church has lost its way by learning what it can do with political power.
I would be remiss if I didn’t point out that today is October 20th, 2022, the 45th Anniversary of the day The Freebird Fell as Billy Ray Cyrus dubbed the Lynyrd Skynyrd plane crash that killed Ronnie van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines and Dean Kilpatrick and was responsible for the depression that led to alcoholism, drunken driving and waist-down paralysis due to an accident of Allen Collins, all of these factors contributing to an early death from pneumonia in 1990. Play some Skynyrd today, especially “Free Bird (Live),” and “Simple Man.” Also play Billy Ray Cyrus’ “The Freebird Fell,” which was co-written by Ed King and Artimus Pyle, two members of the band in the 1970s and 80s, you can hear them together on “Nuthin’ Fancy” and “Southern By The Grace of God.”
This week, we’ve got a few new releases of note. Tegan and Sara’s new album comes out, the song “Yellow” was a good single from it already. First to Eleven is covering Guns N Roses’ “Patience,” and Chez Kane is releasing her second album. An album of John Entwistle rarities is getting released, and I’m going to try the new Stryper album, I’m a big believer in the concept that if you don’t forgive those who wronged you, God will not forgive you, also, the Iconic album was pretty good and two songs from it will likely end up in my favorites of this year. However, I'm reserving today's music for Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Halloween playlist, so I likely won't be hearing the new music of this week until tomorrow. That’s all until next week unless I feel the need to do another therapy post.
