Let’s talk about last week’s music. Sammy Hagar and the Circle and The Dead Daisies both had great albums, Brandi Carlile was great with her deluxe edition, Alice Cooper had a good live album with most of his original band and there was a great single by Sabaton. BAND-MAID also had a good album, possibly an EP due to the length.
Currently, I'm looking for Brian May-sounding guitar work for my brother's DND campaign. There is one solo in particular I'm remembering, but I can't remember the artist or the title, just that it was live and possibly done by Yngwie Malmsteen. Not many guitarists sound like Brian May, which I chalk up to May making his own guitar out of a fireplace mantle rather than using a pre-existing model. The closest guitarists I can think of casually are Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai, who all used a similar tone to May's. Eddie Van Halen might also be a good choice, but "Eruption" doesn't sound like the "Flash Gordon" soundtrack, which is what he's after. I did find him some nice synthesizer music with Rick Wakeman, so that part feels accomplished.
The Mariners start their first playoff series since I was in Middle School today, and as such, I really want them to go all the way to the World Series, especially since all the other teams who hadn't at that point, plus the Chicago Cubs, have made it since then. It feels due, especially with so many sportswriters counting us out in this round and if we do win, they think we'll lose to the Astros in 4. (I acknowledge the Astros will be a tough hurdle, I sometimes half-jokingly claim they made a deal with a wizard to always be good) My hope is the Mariners will get the World Series, face the Braves or Mets and hopefully win, but just getting there would be good enough right now.
This week sees releases of two live albums from Deep Purple from 2001, one in Tokyo with Ronnie James Dio performing guest vocals. Personal top 10 favorite singer Jeff Scott Soto has a collaborative album with bassist Dave Ellefson, hopefully it's good, but I'm suspicious of Ellefson being Missouri Synod, since I was raised ELCA and we differ heavily on politics. I don't hate these people, I just hate how they make me feel when they're demanding I correct myself based on politics, not what Jesus preached. I cannot believe that God is homophobic, it does not make sense based on what I know of LGBTQ+ people, especially considering so many are in monogamous, loving relationships and do worship Jesus as savior and friend. I am trying to disconnect from people who interfere with that belief in aggressive ways/ways that indicate I am not present, but it's hard when so many people talk so casually about it in my building or on the bus, or subjects that remind me of it, mostly the political mess we mired ourselves into. I can still find sanctuary in music, and I hope to keep working at it as my life goes on.
