It was 80 years ago today, that a
legend who imagined all the people living life in peace was born. John Winston Ono Lennon was born on October 9th,
1940 and sadly died on December 8th, 1980, shot to death by a
madman. He believed in the power of the
common man to change the fate of nations, inspiring them through music to
change the current political systems which worked against them. One of his lyrics that still applies right
now is from his first major solo album, Plastic Ono Band, “There’s room at the
top, they’re telling you still/but first you must learn how to smile as you
kill/if you want to be like the folks on the hill.” He was also a strong-worded feminist,
outright titling a song “Woman is the N***** of the World,” which adds “If you
don’t believe me, take a look at the one you’re with. Woman, she’s the slave, to the slaves! Oh, yeah, you’d better scream all about it.” Passionately devoted to Yoko Ono, John got
obsessed, to the point he would ask Yoko to join him in restrooms to keep an
eye on her. However, he would write love
songs to her like “(Just Like) Starting Over” and “Woman,” which are still
among my favorite love songs. Shortly
after he turned 40, while gearing up to help Ringo Starr on an upcoming album
and doing interviews, he was shot by an insane lunatic who wanted to be famous
and Holden Caulfield from Catcher in the Rye.
This ended his life much too early.
Here is a playlist I made on
Spotify of the music he made, either through performing or writing, as it was
shuffled today. Happy 80th
Birthday, John. Hope you’re having fun.
