Fire Emblem Mage Tier Rankings A-E

I had insomnia, so I decided to finish my tier list rankings for this in one post.

A-rank Characters:

Elise-I don’t know her voice actress.  She was mentioned in Sakura’s bio, she is the adoptive younger sister of Corrin.  While Sakura is shy and quiet, Elise is fun-loving and a little boisterous.  There is a lot of fanart of her and Sakura playing together, both on instruments and just like sisters.  Elise sadly dies in Birthright trying to help you.

Camilla-Voiced by Misty Lee, who is also a stage magician and may be Paul Dini’s wife.  Camilla has the title “Doting Sister,” but can be uncomfortable with Corrin because some of her requests of her adoptive sister seem rather sexual, such as bathing in hot springs.  Camilla is a powerhouse with an axe on a wyvern, and in Birthright, becomes Queen of Nohr.  This version appears in Heroes as a healer, which I’ve used to heal the regular Camilla in battle.

Mae-Voiced by Cherami Leigh.  She’s from Echoes, a game I know almost nothing about, but she is a competent mage and part of my team of characters voiced by Cherami Leigh, along with Caeda and Christmas Cecilia.  Cherami’s range is impressive since Mae sounds nothing like the other two.

Tharja-Voiced by Stephanie Sheh, who also voices Hinata in Naruto and Sailor Moon.  An effective dark mage with an unsettling crush on the protagonist of Awakening, regardless of gender.  She is probably the stronger mage in the game, but she’s also the one who would suggest cursing someone to be a snail for 2,000 years and not be kidding.

Lissa-Voiced by Kate Higgins, who also voices Sakura in Naruto and Purah in The Legend of Zelda.  Chrom’s sister and Lucina’s aunt, Lissa is an effective healer and adorable.  She paved the way for Sakura and Elise in the next game and I recall using her for quite some time in the game.  Also, I saw someone ask Kate Higgins to sign their Fire Emblem Awakening slip cover at Anime Washington, that was pretty cool.

Robin-Voiced by Lauren A. Landa, who also voices Annie Leonhardt and Sailor Neptune.  The protagonist of Fire Emblem Awakening and Chrom’s Best Friend Forever, unless you make the choices that make him/her turn into the Fell Dragon, in which case, they die.  Robin’s a good every-player character, mostly a blank slate, but there is also that Grima thing.  Still, it’s hard to hate the third wheel with Chrom and Lucina.

Sumia-A clumsy Pegasus knight who plays “Flower Fortunes” (she loves me, she loves me not) with “I’ll be safe, I’ll be dead, I’ll be safe, I’ll be dead.”  She is also a marvelous chef and skilled with a spear.  Sumia is one of my favorite characters because she is simple and childlike, even though she is an adult.

Constance-A character from Three Houses, Constance has two personalities, a “mad scientist/prom queen” and Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh.  She is manically happy and cackles gleefully as the former, then hopelessly miserable and looks for rocks to crawl under as the latter.  This confuses some characters like Petra.

Cordelia-Another Pegasus knight from Awakening.  She tries to break Sumia of her Flower Fortune habit, but Sumia reveals if it’s good, it inspires her, if it’s bad, she tries to make it not come true.  The leader of the Pegasus Knights of the Shepherds (Chrom’s group), Cordelia gives birth to Severa, a grouchy friend of Lucina’s who has a “it’s not like I like you” attitude.

Ivy-From Fire Emblem Engage.  Ivy inherits the Ice Nation of Elusia.  The Emblem ring of Lyn has been passed down for generations in her family and she uses it upon joining you.  Ivy wears a face net and is devoted to the Divine Dragon in a nation that worships the Fell Dragon.  She is also terrified of ghosts and makes for great comedy.

Celine-Voiced by Rachelle Heger.  The princess of the first kingdom you meet.  She is mostly kind and works well with the Celica ring, but if her peasants or tea is threatened, a dark side will emerge.

Zelestia-Voiced by Elizabeth Maxwell.  Mirror-world Zephia, who we will cover later.  Kind and motherly, she leads the Four Winds against the forces seeking to use the Emblems to destroy each other.  I paired her with the Chrom and Robin Emblem because Matthew Mercer and Elizabeth Maxwell were both in “Attack on Titan.”

B-rank characters:

Death Knight/Jeritza-A man with mental demons.  Mercedes’ younger brother, he is a professor at Garreg Mach and one of Edelgard’s soldiers in her war of Freedom from the Church of Seiros.  Jeritza loves sweets and cats, but does not trust himself since he killed his own father for reasons unclear.  He calls this side of himself the “Death Knight” and it seems to revel in carnage.  Edelgard finds it useful, but Jeritza wants to be locked away so this Death Knight will expire in prison.  Edelgard is disappointed, but respects his wishes, as does Mercedes.

Linhardt-Lazy and doesn’t apply himself.  Technically the healer of the Black Eagles and a big crest researcher, but couldn’t think of anything more useful with that research than a lullaby for children.  Wanted to treat Lysithea as an experiment.  Was pretty much replaced by her and Annette in my second playthrough of Three Houses.

Ignatz-Voiced by Christian LaMonte.  A would-be world traveler and artist, but is Lorenz’s knight instead.  Got picked on by a Pegasus in Three Hopes.  Brilliant young man, but in the wrong profession and way too dedicated to his military life, will likely never get that world trip.

Rinkah-Effectively a human oni in the service of Hoshido.  Tough and strong, one of my more favorite characters in that game while playing it.  Had her A-rank Kaze, but Corrin’s supposed to A-rank Kaze or Kaze dies, which he did.  Seem to recall using her less as the game went on.

Corrin-Voiced by Marcella Lentz-Pope.  Protagonist of Fates, born Hoshido, raised Nohr.  Brothers are Ryoma, Xander, Takumi and another Nohr guy, sisters are Camilla, Hinoka, Sakura and Elise.  Turns into a dragon when stressed or has a Smash Ball.  Sword doubles as chainsaw.  Can seek to unify Hoshido and Nohr.

Beruka-Voiced by Stephanie Sheh.  Camilla’s wyvern-rider retainer.  Wields an axe like Camilla does.  Takes job to protect Camilla seriously.

Orochi-Hoshido Fortune Teller.  Reads characters’ fortunes and tells them if they will be lucky in love or do well in battle.  Can cast spells well.

Celica-Voiced by Erica Lindbeck, who also voices Futaba Sakura in Persona 5.  The protagonist of Echoes, a strong swordswoman.  Helps Celine in Engage and strong in Echoes.  Apparently can be corrupted.  Best friends with a young man named Alm.

C-rank characters:

Felix-Voiced by Lucien Dodge.  He’d be an okay character if he wasn’t so grumpy, he called Dorothea a “weirdo” and when his Christmas version in Heroes got points in every stat, his line was “Can I take off this ridiculous outfit now?”  To his credit, he is great with Annette (I’ve seen enough of their Support Conversations to suggest so), but I do wish he complained and grumbled less considering he’s in an army with Annette and Mercedes, you’d think that make him smile a bit more.

Lorenz-Voiced by Ben Diskin, who also voices Caspar in the game.  A snooty noble, he believes his job is to protect the commonfolk.  I hardly used him in Three Hopes outside of paralogues, getting his conversations through expeditions.  He considers Raphael and Shez lower because they are not nobles and that it is his job to protect them, despite them being much better in battle than he is.

Sylvain-I’d like Sylvain better if he didn’t remind me so much of Ferdinand from the Black Eagles, plus I’ve seen the “dumb guy has crush on smart girl” so many times it’s getting tiring.  His smart girl is spear-wielder Ingrid, a Pegasus knight.  Sylvain can splash you with his summer drink in Heroes, so that’s a plus.

Balthus-I pretty much just used this guy for training in Three Hopes to get his conversations.  He is a total meathead, by which I mean he thinks with his fists.  Edelgard refused him as a bodyguard and Shez tells him his fighting style will get him killed.  Still, there’s some charm about a compulsive gambler and drinker who will beat up anyone.

Hortensia-Ivy’s little sister.  A bit of a brat with very few offensive skills.  I honestly forgot about her when she wasn’t able to use attack staves in sparring matches, leaving her on the sidelines for the rest of the game.  Still, her character gets a happy ending by being in the party, though she wasn’t used much at all.

D-rank characters:

Flayn-I don’t know who voices her.  Her relative Seteth reminds me of judgmental conservative Churchgoers, so that’s a problem, plus, I already knew I wanted to be Edelgard’s friend, which meant I never got too deep into Flayn unless there wasn’t any option.  The first time I played Three Houses, I missed a lot of opportunities solely because I didn’t want to get close to someone I knew I’d have to kill later.

Rodrigue-I don’t know who voices him.  Felix’s Dad and high-ranking in Faerghus.  You need to kill him by your own hands and not harm Byleth if you want to recruit Byleth in Three Hopes, so maybe it’s a little lower than it’d be if I met him more, but I seem to recall him or Felix are ruthless at killing your troops in a Faerghus stage, so I don’t really like him.

Rhajat-Voiced by Stephanie Sheh.  This is just a copy of Tharja that you need one of your child units to produce.  It’s the only way to get lesbian marriage in Fates.  It’s unsavory and you’re likely to marry before you even get the young man to marry somebody.

E-rank characters:

Solon-Those Who Slither In The Dark guy.  Hinted to be involved in torturing Edelgard or Lysithea.  Kidnapped Monica to replace her with Kronya.  Tries to kill Byleth.  Experiments with Remire Village, making it go crazy and attack everyone in the village.

Seiros/Rhea-Voiced by Cherami Leigh.  Demi-goddess, daughter of Sothis.  Creates laws where most important thing is she can’t be criticized or you die.  Makes religion focused on self the state religion of Faerghus.  Says punishment comes from goddess.  The right-wing evangelical who discourages individuality.

Cornelia-Those Who Slither In The Dark woman.  Tortures Hapi until every time she sighs, a monster appears.  Infiltrates Faerghus court.

Gharnef-Guy who worships Medeus, the Fell Dragon.  Brings him to life in original Fire Emblem and Tokyo Mirage Sessions.  Looks like Dr. Doom and Mysterio in those games, respectively.  Evil wizard.

Thales-The guy who tortured Edelgard and killed her 10 siblings.  He has no remorse.

Zephia-Voiced by Elizabeth Maxwell.  Dragon sorceress who tortures Veyle and brings out her evil side.  Tries to collect all Emblem Rings and works for Sombron.

Sombron-Alien dragon seeking Emblem he lost.  Creates army of offspring he feels no love for to find Emblem rings.  Nearly destroys reality in his quest.  Created Alear and Veyle and feels nothing for them other than they are “failures” because they won’t serve him or turn into dragons.
