Last week was much busier than I
thought it’d be in terms of new releases.
The first single from Sammy Hagar and the Circle’s new album “Lockdown
2020,” a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” was released, and as a huge fan of
this supergroup, I am intensely looking forward to the MP3s on January 8th. A posthumous covers album by Chris Cornell
was released without any announcement, aptly titled “No One Sings Like You
Anymore.” It ranges from the soft,
sentimental, sad tracks that make you feel the pain of losing someone before
you’re ready to say goodbye, especially with his version of “Nothing Compares 2
U,” to happier, rocking songs like a cover of Harry Nilsson’s “Jump Into The
Fire.” Fittingly, there’s a cover of
“Watching the Wheels” by John Lennon, a song about his break from the music
business from 1976-1979 to be a full-time dad to Sean Ono Lennon, which was
released on the last album released during his lifetime. K.Flay also released a 3-track covers EP of
90s rock songs, covering Limp Bizkit, Green Day and someone else I don’t
remember, and it was also a fun release.
Demi Lovato also teamed up with All Time Low for a song called
“Monsters,” and it was fun to hear her voice on a hard rock song, while Todd La
Torre, current lead singer from Queensryche, released the first single off his
new solo album, where he sounds like he got Tim “Ripper” Owens to hit some of
the high notes. Jon Bon Jovi also
continued his amazing year with a 3-track Christmas EP that was truly heartfelt
and shows he really misses Tom Petty.
This looks to be the last week of
major releases until 2021, so don’t expect many posts until January 7th. There are three exciting albums getting a
release this week and could make exciting last-minute Christmas gifts,
depending on what your friends and family are into.
Hans Zimmer-Wonder Woman 1984
Soundtrack: 6 months after its initially scheduled release date, DC’s second
Superheroine movie of the year finally gets its public debut in safe theaters
and HBO Max on Christmas Day. It is a
sequel to the 2017 film featuring Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman fighting in World
War I Europe and ultimately confronting Ares, the god of War. Now, we are in 1984, a time when Van Halen
has released “Panama,” Sammy Hagar has released “I Can’t Drive 55,” a new era
of Godzilla movies begins in Japan, Alvin Davis of the Seattle Mariners wins
rookie of the year for the American League and Ronald Reagan is re-elected in
the biggest landslide victory in election history. The classic (not sure how I feel calling a
4-year-old piece of music a classic) Wonder Woman leitmotif returns as Wonder
Woman fights Soviets and her longtime nemesis Cheetah, played by Kristen Wiig. This soundtrack was actually released on the
16th, but I didn’t know that last week.
Paul McCartney-McCartney III: When
forced into lockdown, the lefthanded Beatles bassist decided to do what most
musicians did, compose and record. No
stranger to recording multiple parts of a recording and overdubbing them to
create a full song (that’s how he started his solo career), Paul has kept the
sound and contents of the album a secret since announcement, with the track
names only being revealed Tuesday morning.
That obviously isn’t much to go on, but Paul McCartney is a longtime
professional with a great voice and has made quite a few great songs and demos
in the solo overdub fashion, so this should be worth listening to.
George Lynch and Jeff Pilson-Heavy
Hitters: The guitarist and bassist of Dokken have teamed up again, but this
time with a twist. Previous endeavors
have involved re-recording Dokken songs or other hair metal hits, this time,
they aim their sights on Top 40 hits like Duran Duran’s Ordinary World,
Prince’s Kiss, Carole King’s I Feel The Earth Move and R.E.M.’s It’s The End of
the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine).
The two seem very excited about this project and it looks like it’ll be
fun, I’ve heard metal reinterpretations of non-metal songs and non-metal
reinterpretations of metal songs and both can be quite fun if done right. They released “Ordinary World” as a single
and it was quite good, I’m hoping to hear more that sound even better.
