It is Thursday, September 15th, and it is once again time for this week’s music updates. I have listened to the last couple weeks of music and am mostly caught up now. The Charlie Daniels Band had a good live album from 1974 and I added tracks from that and their 1976 release “High Lonesome” to their respective playlists on Spotify. The Hu had a nice album with “Black Thunder” easily their strongest track from it, as King’s X had a strong song with “Let it Rain.” Kris Kristofferson’s live album was great and made me check out Olivia Newton-John’s cover of “Me and Bobby McGee,” which was another strong showing from the recently departed singer. Nita Strauss’ “Summer Storm” was a great instrumental single, Kelly Clarkson and Dolly Parton sang a nice duet version of “9 to 5,” and there were some great tracks from Julian Lennon’s new album “Jude.” Also, Amy Grant’s 25th anniversary deluxe re-release of “Behind the Eyes” is really nice and has some great strong songs about God and relationships.
Of course, the big news is that Ozzy Osbourne’s probably final album was released. It rivals “Tribute,” the live album with Randy Rhoads as both his best album and the best Metal album period. With guitar performances from Jeff Beck, Mike McCready (with friend Duff McKagan on bass on his track), Tony Iommi and Zakk Wylde, it is a tour de force of the hardest rock and easily forged my Halloween playlist. If that wasn’t enough, there were also singles by FLETCHER, Sammy Hagar and the Circle and an upcoming old live release from 1969 by the Jimi Hendrix Experience.
Speaking of, this week, FLETCHER’s album is released, showing passionate pop from a lesbian/bisexual perspective. There is also going to be an album by my hometown band, Death Cab for Cutie, showcasing artistic lyrics and gentle music. Noah Cyrus’ album is also going to be released, dealing with clinical depression through gentle pop music. Rina Sawayama is also releasing an album of varying pop styles, loves and protests, while the legendary Ringo Starr releases his latest EP. There will also be an EP of live music from Smith/Kotzen, a supergroup of Adrian Smith from Iron Maiden and virtuoso Richie Kotzen, with Kotzen’s wife Julia Lage on bass (she also plays bass in Vixen). Lastly in this busy week is a Creedence live album from the Royal Albert Hall, 1970. This will be a big week for me. Even then, it’ll have to wait a little as three women singer-songwriters (Lara Taubman, Randie O’Neil and Mary Ann Redmond) followed me on Twitter and I added generous amounts of their music to my Unheard playlist to check out.
Lastly, here is the aforementioned Halloween Playlist, it is mostly a celebration of Ozzy Osbourne since this seems to probably be his last studio album:
