Did anyone else sleep in to almost 5:00 pm because they finally felt like they were no longer fighting a war on all fronts and could actually sleep for once? Because I just did.
Anyway, last week had some nice surprise releases from some of my favorite artists. Ariana Grande had a remix of one of the songs on her last album with guest appearances by Doja Cat and Megan Thee Stallion added in. It’s kind of a guilty pleasure “made for making love” song, though, so unless you’re lonely and need some material (like me) or married and want to add something to your lovemaking sessions, I wouldn’t recommend it. Hayley Williams released a calm single called “Teardrop,” making me wonder if she’s gearing up for another album this year, while Selena Gomez released “De Una Vez,” a pop song entirely in Spanish. Bellingham-born band Death Cab For Cutie released The Georgia EP, a collection of covers from Georgia-based bands to celebrate the state going blue. “Waterfalls,” which originated the phrase “Don’t Go Chasing Waterfalls,” is on it, as is “Fall On Me” by R.E.M.
This week has at least three albums
scheduled for release that I’m interested in, the first of which I’ve been
waiting for a long time for.
The Dead Daisies-Holy Ground: In
late 2019, The Dead Daisies released a single called “Righteous Days.” This
showed a new day had dawned for the band, because since 2016, the band had been
lead sung by John Corabi and had Marco Mendoza on bass. The single showed Rock and Roll Hall of Fame
member Glenn Hughes had taken over these roles, best known for his tenure with
Deep Purple, but also a member of the band Trapeze, a singer for Black Sabbath
on the “Seventh Star” album, collaborator with Tony Iommi in his solo career
and founder of the supergroup Black Country Communion. Since then, the singles “Unspoken,” “Bustle
and Flow” and “Holy Ground” have all been released last year, and finally, the
full album is to be released tonight. The only other detail known before release is
that it will feature “30 Days In The Hole,” a cover of a Humble Pie song. This is the second cover of this song in the
past calendar year, as Ace Frehley (formerly of KISS) teamed with Robin Zander
of Cheap Trick for a cover for Ace’s “Origins Vol. 2” album.
W.E.T.-Retransmission: A Frontiers Records Supergroup featuring Jeff
Scott Soto on vocals, W.E.T. has a new album coming out. Thus far, one of the singles “Got to be About
Love” is a good song, sounding like a good praise song for Churches, though I
don’t know if any members of the band are particularly religious. Soto is one of the better unsung vocalists in
Hard Rock/Heavy Metal, and usually worth listening to, I like his cover of Deep
Purple’s “Mistreated” with Yngwie Malmsteen and I loved his solo album last
year.
Maggie Lindemann-PARANOIA: I picked
up a song called “Knife Under My Pillow” by this artist late last year to try
it out, the cover was cute and the title suggested maybe an Angelina Jolie
obsession (at least according to the IMDB trivia for the 1999 Tomb Raider
movie). However, it was a delightful
little hard rock song, reminiscent of the pop-punk style of Avril Lavigne, that
I added to my “Rock and Roll Women” playlist on Spotify, which is my only
playlist to get a like thus far. I later
found out there will be a whole album by this artist, with good cover art
again, this time, the artist has styled her hair like Ryuko from the Anime Kill
la Kill. I hope this will be a good and
fun woman-sung rock album.
