Thoughts on Yesterday and new music for 1/8/2021

I feel I must address the violence across our nation yesterday, the continuation of a cult movement around the 45th/illegally elected President bent, presumably, on overthrowing the Democrat party and turning the nation into a NeoNazi paradise.  The blame is squarely on the Republican Party for not severing ties with this homicidal madman, but instead encouraging and coddling him, not at all concealing their desire for him to be in charge for the entirety of his life, then hand it off to similarly destructive false “Messiahs” they can place their trust in who will allow them to murder the LGBTQ+ community, African Americans, people from the Middle East, Islamic people in general and Latin Americans without consequence in a new Holocaust.  It is utterly disgusting to see a party that claims to be the voice of God blindly follow a man so much like Satan.  I finally had enough and screamed on Facebook and Twitter: “F*#$ THIS S#%$! If he's not imprisoned or executed, we don't have a country and can no longer call ourselves "The United States of America," but must separate into Nazi America and Democracy America.”  I have honestly been seriously believing, with the obvious rapacious attitude of the Republican Party, it may be time for the Country to split into two sides as two different countries because it seems obvious we can no longer co-exist.  I want to believe I’m wrong, but I’m seeing no evidence I’m wrong and no shortage of evidence that I’m right.  If this is the case, I sincerely hope the split is quick, relatively painless and doesn’t lead to instant war between the two sides.

On a brighter note, today marks the first week with noteworthy albums being released and me knowing about it ahead of time.  There were minor releases on Christmas and New Year’s Day, the best ones came on New Year’s Day itself, with Brandi Carlile releasing a two-song single where she covered fellow Seattle-area musical act Soundgarden.  It was a delightful surprise to hear Brandi’s normally folk voice paired with a more metal backing, it really shows her range as an artist.  Dolly Parton and Barry Gibb also released a cover of the Bee Gees song “Words,” which was also a good listen.  These, in fact, lead to the first release of this week.

Barry Gibb-Greenfields, The Gibb Brothers songbook: Everyone know the Bee Gees for disco and pop-related songs like “Stayin’ Alive,” but this album has a strong country influence on some classic Bee Gees songs.  Keith Urban, Little Big Town, Jason Isbell and Brandi Carlile all guest on this album, singing with Barry Gibb, Brandi singing “Run To Me.”  It looks like a fun listen and some good classic pop in a country style.

Sammy Hagar and the Circle-Lockdown 2020: Sammy Hagar, Vic Johnson, Michael Anthony and Jason Bonham refused to let the quarantine stop them from making music, jamming on some classic rock songs through something like Skype or Zoom.  The first single, a cover of David Bowie’s “Heroes,” is an enjoyable listen and a good hard rock take on a classic song.  Tracks listed include “Whole Lotta Rosie” from AC/DC, “Won’t Get Fooled Again” by The Who and “Right Now” by Sammy and Michael’s old band Van Halen.  At Sammy’s birthday party last year, shortly after the death of Eddie Van Halen, the band played “Eagles Fly,” a Sammy Hagar solo track Eddie had contributed bass to, then held a moment in silence in his memory.

There are also two singles I’m going to check out which may be covers of Miley Cyrus’ “The Climb” and Warrant’s “Cherry Pie.”  On January 13th, all-girl Japanese Hard Rock band Band-Maid, who wear French Maid outfits when they perform, will also release their new album, “Unseen World.”  I’m hoping we get another solid year of good music.
