Hope in the Rubble - RWBY Fan Fiction

This is the fan fiction I advertised on Sunday, it's about the Rooster Teeth web series RWBY.  Today is the birthday of the character Yang in the show, so I felt like writing something to honor the occasion.

It was a dark time for Team RWBY.  Most of Remnant had been seized by Salem’s Forces under Cinder’s command, incinerating most resistance that crossed her path.  Huntsmen and Huntresses were slain by her hand by the thousands.  Weiss’ family was now gone, save Winter, who was too busy fighting on the front line to be contacted, and Qrow was the only survivor of either the Roses or Xiao Longs.  They had no contact with Team JNR in months and had only managed to get Jaune’s sister Saphron and her wife and baby boy to their hideout in the Belladonna’s mansion on Menagerie.  “This sucks!” shouted Yang in the spacious living room as torrential rains poured down.  “We’ve been busting our backs, fighting for what feels like centuries and she’s taken everything from us!”

“Yang, do you want to help us come up with a strategy here?” asked Ruby.

“What’s the point?!  The Grimm’ll just come here, slaughter everyone and I’ll spend my birthday fighting to keep my girlfriend and her family alive and probably fail just so Salem and Cinder can rub THAT in my face!” scowled Yang.  She cried out in frustration and stomped off.

“It’s Yang’s birthday?” asked Weiss.

“It’s July 28th.” Said Ruby, looking at her scroll, which showed a smiling, winking Yang, Blake’s showing the same image.

“Guess this is the first time since we’ve reunited we’ve been able to slow down enough to recognize it.” Added Blake.  Weiss and Ruby nodded, the three pausing to think over this fact.

“We should do something for her.” Said Weiss.  “Blake, you can make her a cake and Ruby, you can get some party games, right?”

“I can do that.” Said Blake, heading off to the kitchen.

“Sure, but, what are you going to do?” asked Ruby.

“I’m going to get Ilia, Saphron and Terra to be here, it may not be much, but it’s all we’ve got right now.  Maybe I can pick something up over at a store, too.” She said.  The team set off on their tasks, hoping to make something good out of their current situation.

“What are you baking, sweetie?” asked Kali, entering the kitchen.

“Mom!  It’s a cake, for Yang’s birthday.” Said Blake, somewhat startled, going back to mixing the batter.

“Let me help.” Replied Kali.  “You know, I can’t help but notice how close you two are.  You must really want this to be special.”

“Well, uh, um, I, uh…” stammered Blake.

“It’s okay, honey.  I knew a woman who had a crush on me.  She was such a sweetheart, but she wasn’t Ghira.  So long as Yang makes you happy, that’s what matters.” Said Kali, cradling Blake’s head.  Blake hugged Kali right afterward, so relieved to hear her Mom say these words.

“Mom…thank you…” she said, tears of joy leaking from her eyes.  Forty-five minutes later, Ruby, Weiss, Blake, Kali, Ghira, Saphron, Terra, Adrian and Ilia were all sitting at a banquet table with a few wrapped parcels stacked near an empty chair.

“Where is she?” asked Ilia.

“I’ll go get her, just hold tight.” Replied Blake.  Blake went to their mutual bedroom, seeing Yang look at a picture of Summer Rose.

“I swore I’d pay them back for you…some daughter I turned out to be, huh?” she muttered.

“Yang, I’ve got a good surprise for you downstairs.” Said Blake.

“What kind of 'good surprise?'  No offense, Blakey, but I'm not sure I'm in the mood.” Replied Yang.

“We gathered all we could to celebrate your birthday.  We wanted this to be special for you.” Said Blake.  Yang got up and looked at her girlfriend.

“I’ve been through so much I find it hard to believe, but I know you wouldn't make up something just to make me feel better.” She stated.

"Trust me, you're going to love it." smiled Blake.  Yang proceeded to follow Blake downstairs.

“Surprise, Happy Birthday!” shouted the guests.  Yang’s face burst into a smile as tears of joy rolled down her cheeks.

“Y-You got your folks, and Ilia, and Saphron and Terra…?” she said, stunned.

“We wouldn’t miss your big day with you here.” Smiled Kali.

“You treat Blake well, I’m kind of jealous.” Added Ilia.

“You’re a good friend and a good babysitter.” Commented Terra.  Yang hugged them all one-by-one as Blake brought out the cake.

“You baked this yourself?” asked Yang.

“I had help from Mom, but we did it ourselves.” Replied Blake.

“Sweet, a double Belladonna cake.” Smiled Yang.  Blake blushed slightly, wondering if Yang knew she had referenced her and her Mom’s butts.  Nonetheless, the gifts were good though cheap, Yang took in some target practice and played exciting video games with Ruby, Blake, Ilia and Kali through the night.  For one night in the never-ending war against Salem and her Grimm, things were joyous.  It was a great night Yang wouldn't forget for the rest of her life.

The End
