Music update for 7/23/2021

Most of the releases I discussed last week had something to keep them interesting, the Resurrection Kings album wasn't as aggressively conservative as I thought it would be (though I couldn't make out much of the lyrics), and there were some impressive performances by the Tedeschi Trucks Band in performing Layla live.  Gary Clark Jr. also performed his song on the tribute album well and the reverb added made it sound like a genuine 1960s recording.  Blondie wasn't bad, but their live performances weren't exactly "the definitive live showcase of their music" either, so it depends on how big a Blondie fan you are if you want to check it out.

Jon Foreman of Switchfoot continues to prove why this is his and Brandi Carlile's year by guesting on a NEEDTOBREATHE song called "Carry Me," a great Gospel Rock song that has no political agenda attached to it.  NEEDTOBREATHE already had a song with Carrie Underwood this year and I would recommend both, they are both great songs to improve your mood.  The only downside is these duets are what I was looking forward to the most from the album and I now have them a week before the album releases.

As for this week; Foo Fighters released an album that features them performing songs from their latest album (released back in February) live, while the first half is a BeeGees tribute credited to the "DeeGees."  Whether this is the Foo Fighters under a pseudonym or a different band altogether, I don't know, all I can tell you is if this is the Foos, Dave Grohl can hit some real high notes.

Canadian Metal Queen Lee Aaron releases her latest album "Radio On," which has been mostly winners from the singles.  It's amazing how someone who released albums two years before my brother was born and in the year I was born can still be rocking with the best of them.  I am really looking forward to this one.

The last big release I'm looking forward to is Yngwie Malmsteen, a Swedish guitar virtuoso who I saw play for Generation Axe in 2016.  He blends classical music, classic rock and various other styles in a tour de force of electric guitar work, inspired by Ritchie Blackmore of Deep Purple and Rainbow and to a lesser extent, Jimmy Page of Led Zeppelin.  I look forward to what he brings to the table with this release.
